Süloğlu - Suloglu - Селиолу - Σούλογλου
Similar to Lalapasa and Meric districts, Suloglu is a small-populated settlement close to Edirne Center, where agriculture and animal husbandry significantly shape economic life and despite having a historical heritage, it has not been utilized sufficiently and has deficiencies in social and economic infrastructure. It is seen that the district has a relative advantage in terms of large cattle breeding and milk production.
Almost all of the people living in the district are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. In addition, the activation of the Edirne Organized Industrial Zone, which was established within the borders of Suloglu in 1994, and the start of the demand for the region will provide alternative work areas for the local people.
Despite the tourism potential provided by the historical, cultural and natural assets that Suloglu and similar districts have, the fact that the socio-economic life level is relatively underdeveloped and the district residents do not voice their demands in this regard creates difficulties in opening the district to tourism.
The district is located in the northern half of Edirne province, on the Lalapaşa Plateau. It borders Kirklareli province to the east, Edirne central district to the west, Lalapasa to the north, and Havsa to the south. In this respect, it is the ninth district of Edirne.
Suloglu district is a settlement where rural life prevails and has significant human resources, irrigation facilities, land, and experience in animal husbandry, as well as wheat and sunflower production. A frequent destination for migratory beekeepers and the site of the "Hope in the Wings of Bees" project, the district has potential for beekeeping with its sunflowers and fauna. Furthermore, the fact that the Edirne Organized Industrial Zone, which has development potential, is located within the district borders is one of the elements that determines the district's identity.
It has a continental climate. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold and rainy. While the region's terrain has an undulating structure, it doesn't negatively impact agriculture. While it doesn't have significant elevations, plains, or streams, ponds built on small streams positively impact the district's agriculture.
The ponds in Suloglu are important surface water resources. Despite the abundance of water resources, irrigated agriculture is practiced on a relatively small portion of the district's agricultural land. Efforts to develop the Edirne Organized Industrial Zone (OIZ) established in the region and the provision of drinking water for major cities increase the importance of making the right choices regarding water resources and their diverse use, which are also important for agriculture.
Suloglu is the eighth district of Edirne in terms of population. Its residents make their living through agriculture and animal husbandry. Various grains, industrial crops, fruits, and small and large cattle are raised in the district. Beekeeping is also developing. Lignite and stone quarries are available, and high-quality lime is produced. Industry is not developed. Transportation is good. A market is held on Fridays, and a fair is held in August.
The Suloglu district has significant potential in the production of sunflowers, wheat, and animal products. Although the number of animals has decreased recently due to imports, production of both cattle and sheep remains significant for the district. Despite these advantages, the income of district residents from the sale of agricultural products remains limited. Efforts such as forming cooperatives for the marketing of products and developing joint marketing strategies will significantly increase the income of district residents.
Suloglu and its surroundings have been a cradle of important civilizations since ancient times. In the area between the villages of Keramettin, Tatarlar, and Domurcali, there are menhirs and dolmens, examples of the first monumental tombs from the prehistoric period. Tumulus tombs from the Thracian period are located near the villages of Geckinli and Kukuler. Also near Tatarlar Village is the monumental Tatar Tomb. The Balkan Martyrs' Monument is located in Geckinli Village, where the Balkan Wars were intensely fought. Suloglu's historical location on a major trade route between Tekirdag Port and Central Europe has also increased its importance. The district is not well-developed in terms of tourism. The Suloglu Dam and Park, along with the Kukuler Grove, are important recreational areas during the summer months. The Suloglu Dam, along with the Keramettin, Sulecik, and Geckinli Reservoirs, contribute to the development of local tourism.
