Burgas is the largest city in southeastern Bulgaria and the second-largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, and one of the largest in the country by area. It is the fourth-largest city in the country (after Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna). Burgas is an important cultural, economic, transportation, administrative, tourist, and educational center in southeastern Bulgaria and is of national importance.

The Burgas Cathedral and the Poda reserve are among the hundreds of national tourist attractions. The medieval monastery of St. Anastasia, on the island of the same name, covering an area of approximately 9 acres in the waters of Burgas Bay, is protected and open to visitors.
