Çerkezköy - Cerkezkoy - Черкезкьой - Τσερκέζκιοϊ
Cerkezkoy, as a result of the expansion of Istanbul's industry, has gained the appearance of an industrial city and is on the way to becoming a metropolitan district. Before industrialization, it was an agricultural town with a large population of settled Thracians like other Thracian settlements. With the acceleration of industrialization, it has started on the path to becoming a metropolitan area where workers from all over Turkey come and live together.
Despite reflecting the characteristics of traditional Thrace, intense industrial production suppresses all other characteristics. It is observed that the district's population changes in response to the advancements and declines in industrial production. During growth periods, a group including foreigners migrates to the district; while in periods of decline, the population rapidly decreases due to the closure of factories.
The ability of people from different places to live harmoniously in Cerkezkoy significantly contributes to the peaceful atmosphere of Thrace and serves as a good example for promoting social peace in Turkey.
Local organizations' efforts to understand the deficiencies of Cerkezkoy'un social and physical structures by conducting highly participatory studies, and the participation of city residents in these studies on a voluntary basis, is another exemplary feature of Cerkezkoy.
The district, despite having an ancient history, has its tourism identity overshadowed by the industry's influence on the city's appearance. Cerkezkoy' development path depends on increasing the physical, financial, and social opportunities that will enable the development of industrial zones in the city, and reducing the damage the industry causes to the environment. Reducing environmental damage is not only crucial for Cerkezkoy, which marks the beginning of pollution in the Ergene River, but it is also of great importance for all of Thrace.
The Cerkezkoy district is today one of Turkiye's largest industrial centers. Cerkezkoy's industrial establishments are concentrated in the textile, rubber and plastic, paint and chemical, metal and machinery, food, healthcare, mining, wood, electronics and white goods, construction materials, stationery, and automotive sectors, employing approximately 30,000 people.
After studying Cerkezkoy's geographic, geological, hydrographic, climatic, soil, vegetation, agricultural, commercial, economic, and industrial characteristics within the Istanbul metropolitan plan, Cerkezkoy was adopted as an alternative and the establishment of an Organized Industrial Zone in Cerkezkoy was approved by the Council of Ministers' Decree No. 7/6177 dated March 29, 1973.
This is Turkiye's second largest Organized Industrial Zone with its 1,250 hectares of land, after the 1,500-hectare Organized Industrial Zone in Adana.
The district of Cerkezkoy is surrounded by the Catalca and Silivri districts of Istanbul province to the east and south, the Corlu district to the southwest, the Luleburgaz district of Kirklareli to the west and the Kapakli district to the north.
It is 56 km from Suleymanpasa and 110 km from Istanbul. The district lands consist of slightly hilly plains in the Ergene basin.
The district of Cerkezkoy was founded after the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, and Circassians were settled here. The Circassians left the region a short time later, and immigrants from Bulgaria settled here, forming the present-day indigenous population.
Transportation to Cerkezkoy is provided by road and rail. The Cerkezkoy district is located at the intersection of the Kinali Junction-Cerkezkoy-Corlu road and the Cerkezkoy-Saray-Vize-Kirklareli roads. It is also connected to the TEM Highway via the Beyciler-Cerkezkoy connection road. The TEM connection road, which is important for Cerkezkoy, strengthens the district's relationship with the Istanbul metropolis.
Railway connection in Cerkezkoy is provided by the Istanbul-Edirne-Europe railway. Cerkezkoy station is one of the important export stations.
Seaway connection in the district is connected to the Port of Tekirdag.
