Çorlu - Corlu - Чорлу - Τσόρλου
Initially, it is a region concentrated with chemical, leather, and textile factories, with rich underground water resources and vacant land designated for industry. Although the recent slowdown in these sectors has caused many factories to close, they are still considered dominant sectors.
With a fifty percent occupancy rate, the Corlu Leather Organized Industrial Zone has the potential to host more enterprises.
Similar to Cerkezkoy, industry has surpassed the region's tourism and cultural potentials. The city center bears a strong resemblance to Istanbul's Bayrampasa and Esenler districts.
Despite being a large industrial region, the insufficient development of social life leads a significant portion of residents to prefer Istanbul on weekends and holidays. This situation creates problems in supplying qualified personnel for the industry. However, in Corlu and Cerkezkoy, the impact of this issue is less felt due to their proximity to Istanbul compared to other industrial regions in Luleburgaz and Thrace.
Corlu is a large industrial center with the potential to accommodate more industry and people, and is also a candidate for further growth. In the future, the city, which is likely to host a larger population, has significant needs for the construction of a large number of new housing, as well as organized urbanization and the improvement of physical and social infrastructure.
What is expected from Corlu is to become a modern city with an industry that uses advanced technology and produces high-added-value goods.
Corlu is the largest settlement center in Thrace after Istanbul. Its population is larger than that of the provincial centers of Tekirdag, Kirkareli, and Edirne. Moreover, it is more developed in every respect than these three provinces.
Corlu, the Sultan's Tent, is Tekirdag's most developed district with its favorable natural structure, strong transportation links, and strategic importance.
Its elevation is between 150-180 meters above sea level. It is located in the Ergene basin and a central part of Thrace. It ranks fourth in Tekirdag Province in terms of area covered. The district's elevation is 183 meters. Ridges extending from the Yildiz Mountains constitute the highest part of Corlu. Most of its land lies within the Ergene Basin (the area where the Ergene River drains). This is a fill area where sediments eroded from the Yildiz (Istranca) Mountains and carried by streams are deposited.
The district has generally flat terrain with fertile soil. Due to its inland location, it has a continental climate, with hot and dry summers and cold and rainy winters. It is the region that receives the least rainfall in Thrace. 20% of precipitation falls in spring, 10% in summer, 30% in autumn, and 40% in winter. The average wind direction is north-northeast, and wind speeds reach up to 3.6 m/s. These winds do not bring much precipitation. The south and southwest winds that bring moist air masses and cause precipitation are the Lodos and Qibla. The Karayel brings a cold wave, causing snowfall.
The annual average temperature is 12.6 C, the highest average temperature is 18.2 C, and the lowest average temperature is 8.1 C. Because Corlu is located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, it is influenced by these climate zones. Cold air masses descending from the north and moist, warm air currents coming from the Mediterranean and Aegean from the south determine the region's climate.
The Ergene River passes 12 km north of Corlu. This stream is a tributary of the Meric River, the largest river in Thrace. The Ergene Stream joins the Corlu Stream near the Muratli district and flows into the Meric River near the Uzunkopru district. Corlu Stream is fed by the eastern slopes of the Istranca Mountains and connects many seasonal streams. The Ergene Stream is used to irrigate agricultural fields. Corlu Stream has become unusable due to industrial pollution. Other important streams are the Pinarbasi, Esece, and Ahimehmet streams.
The Corlu Karatepe Quarries, located in the richest area of the region in terms of sand and stone, meet the needs of the Thrace region. Natural gas was discovered in drillings conducted by TPOAS in the Yulafli Village and Onerler Karacali region, and well drilling is still ongoing.
The district is also rich in groundwater resources. The land, covered in sand and gravel like a bowl, conducts falling snow and rainwater underground like a filter. This situation also poses a pollution risk. Leaks from garbage and industrial waste also contaminate this groundwater. The Ergene Basin accounts for 274 hm3/year of the region's groundwater potential.
The amount of water used by Tekirdag Province accounts for 42% of the total. It is noteworthy that 61% of this amount (51.72 hm3/year) belongs to the Corlu District. Furthermore, Corlu District's water withdrawals for drinking, utility, and industrial purposes exceed its irrigation water intake. The drinking and utility water needs of the district are met by a total of (26) deep boreholes opened in Havuzlar, Kizilagac, Seyhsinan, Muhittin, Nusratiye, Yeni Sanayi, Toplu Konut, Kazimiye Emlak Konut, Saglik Mahallesi, Yesiltepe, Fairgrounds districts and by providing a total of 330 Lt/sec of water from underground built-in cabinets in these areas.
According to Article 2 (26) of the Law No. 6360 on the Establishment of Metropolitan Municipalities and Twenty-Seven Districts in Fourteen Provinces and Amendments to Certain Laws and Decree Laws published in the Official Gazette dated 06.12.2012 and numbered 28489, Ergene District was established in Tekirdag province, consisting of the neighborhoods of Corlu Municipality, villages and municipalities listed below, with Marmaracik Municipality as the center.

The first step toward transformation has been taken in Hidiraga, a neighborhood in Tekirdag's Corlu district, known as "Koretown," a neighborhood frequently associated with public order and narcotics issues. Demolition of derelict buildings has begun, and plastering has begun on the walls known as "stash." Provincial Police Chief Metin Turanlı stated, "We will save the new generation from the ills of the old generation."
