Kesan City Museum

The Kesan City Museum, housed in a historic building that served as a field hospital during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1914, opened its doors to visitors on Monday, March 18, 2024.

The "Kesan City Museum" project, which reflects the historical and cultural values of Kesan, was initiated by the Kesan Municipality with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. Its aims include ensuring the transmission of Kesan's urban history and cultural richness to future generations, fostering a sense of belonging and civic awareness – key objectives of city museums – and increasing the city's tourism potential. The project began on February 1, 2020, and was completed on March 18, 2024, the 109th anniversary of the Canakkale Victory, a significant date for the museum building, and the museum was opened to visitors.

The building housing the museum served as a rear-front hospital during the Canakkale Battles in 1914; after the war, it continued to be used as a Red Crescent Hospital, a local hospital, and a state hospital until the early 1990s. The building, the best-preserved in the city center, has existed for over 100 years and served as a hospital for many years. Although it has lost its function as a hospital, its continued association with the public as the "Old Hospital" is significant in terms of the meaning attributed to it. For one age group of city dwellers, it's the building where their children were born; for another, it's where they lost their elders. In the city's memory, it remains the hospital. With the establishment of the City Museum Coordination Center in 2020, it gained a new meaning in the eyes of the city's residents, and its long-awaited function as a "museum" was quickly embraced by the public.

The Hospital Building, a registered historical structure, contributes to the city's brand value, tourism, and promotion as the Kesan City Museum through its restoration, re-functionalization, and landscaping.

The Kesan City Museum, which bridges the past and future of Kesan, consists of two floors. In the right-hand corridor of the symmetrically shaped, E-shaped building, visitors are greeted by chronological information panels covering Kesan's history from prehistoric times to the Proclamation of the Republic, silicone sculptures of Gazi Suleyman Pasha, the Conqueror of Rumelia, and Hersekzade Ahmet Pasha, a silicone sculpture of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in a facade-style decoration depicting Kesan's importance in the Canakkale Wars, a silicone sculpture of the famous musician Selim Sesler in the music culture room, and alongside these, narratives on migration, press and communication history, and health history. In this area reminiscent of a historical corridor, events and individuals who left their mark on Kesan's history are presented with photographs, documents, and inventory collected from the public. Passing to the other side of the corridor, sections on fauna and flora, climate, the Saros Bay, agricultural activities conveyed through dioramas, the history of education, traditions and customs, culinary culture, architecture, administration, and sports history are again presented with inventory collected from the public; It is supported by LED and touch screens.

In the Craftsmen's Bazaar created on the lower floor of the building, there are examples of professions that are on the verge of being forgotten, such as blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and shoemakers, as well as life-size silicone sculptures of local tradesmen from Kesan, and the printing presses of Onder Newspaper, which was published continuously in the local area for 57 years, and a digital archive created on a touch screen.

In addition, the workshop and temporary exhibition area on the lower floor and the amphitheater in the garden host the events of schools and institutions.

The project was awarded the restoration application prize in the "Competition for Encouraging Projects and Applications for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage".

Kesan City Museum is a private museum under the Kesan Municipality and was opened to visitors on March 18, 2024.
