The Trakya University Natural History Museum was established in 2022 by a team led by Prof. Dr. Yilmaz Camlitepe, with the contributions and support of Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Tabakoglu. The specimens exhibited in the museum are original and have been prepared by the faculty members of the Trakya University Biology Department in accordance with museum techniques. No hunting was involved in the procurement of the specimens.
The museum displays 1923 specimens from a total of 754 species, including various invertebrates (insects), mollusks, plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, collected from different regions of our country, particularly reflecting the biological richness of the Thrace region. Scientific data on these specimens are presented to local and foreign visitors in Turkish and English on information panels and a scrolling touchscreen.
To serve both international researchers and support the living museum content, the Natural History Museum has an international herbarium in the storage facilities of the Biology Department of Thrace University containing over 100,000 insect specimens, 2,000 identified insect species, over 1,000 skeletons and stuffed vertebrate specimens, and 15,000 plant specimens.
The Natural History Museum, as a private museum affiliated with Thrace University, has been welcoming visitors since January 7, 2023.
